In the U.S. transportation system, there are on average 54 million tons of freight worth almost $48 billion that ships each day or about 63 tons of goods per person per year – a total that is growing every day. We are going to take a deeper look at the one transportation mode changing the industry, LTL shipping.

Less-Than-Truckload shipping can be complicated at times, which is why we are here to help you when you need it. We’ve put together a full LTL shipping guide, covering everything from the basics and history to the benefits, common questions and LTL shipping rate calculations.

What is LTL Shipping?

The term less than truckload is the basis for LTL, the acronym that serves as the standard name the transportation industry uses for this freight mode. At the most basic level, LTL shipping is the transportation of freight that occupies only a portion of an entire trailer. Multiple shippers share space on the same truck only paying for their portion, making LTL a cost-efficient method of shipping freight.

What’s the difference between LTL and TL?

Both modes of transport have benefits, but depending on the freight details(weight, size, distance), there is always one better suited for the job. A Full Truckload will be used when your freight exceeds 15,000lbs or when more than 24 feet of the trailer space is required.Full Truckload shipping is very efficient, safe, and can be used in a multitude of ways. Full Truckload Shipping is a great option when goods are time sensitive since carriers can transport from shipper to consignee without the delay of offloading and reloading at terminals along the way.

Are there any benefits to LTL shipping?

LTL offers you benefits beyond Flexibility and Decreased shipping costs:

  • Eco-friendliness.
    • LTL not only lowers your shipping cost, but also the carbon footprint that is made by sharing space with other shippers on the same truck.
  • Extra service options.
    • If you ship with LTL carriers, you have access to extended services like inside pickup and delivery, liftgates, non-commercial delivery and notification options.
  • Trackability.
    • LTL Freight Carriers will generally provide an estimate of transit days and track your shipments in real time. Shippers gain access by referring to the bill of lading number, PRO number, PO number or shipment reference number.

How does LTL work?

Ever hear of the Hub and Spoke model? This is how the Less Than Truckload world works. Local terminals are the spokes and larger central terminals are the hubs or distribution centers. Local freight gathers at the spoke terminals from the various shippers and it gets combined into outbound trailers. The Goods then move to the hub terminal where the freight is either sorted and delivered or consolidated for further transport to its destination.

If your a company that has a relatively small load of freight, Less Than Truckload would be an option for you to transport your goods. The LTL carriers across the nation are accustomed to moving palletized freight that can be broken down into smaller units. These carriers will also transport drums and freight that is properly crated, bundled or bagged. When a company has a relatively small load of freight, they often choose an LTL carrier to transport their goods.
